SUMMARY:
-Provides leadership in ensuring quality and consistency of the design and development process for complex electro-mechanical assemblies in accordance with applicable regulatory, customer and EMD internal requirements.
-Originates and develops analysis methods for determining reliability of systems, components and processes for locomotive applications.
-Prepares diagrams, charts, drawings, calculations, and reports for identifying quality and reliability performance and makes recommendations for improvements.
-Conducts analysis of product failures, reliability problems and quality problems and conducts investigations to determine the reliability required to meet customer goals, considering the cost limitations for equipment up/down time, repair/replacement costs, weight, size, and availability of materials/equipment.
-Determines the cost advantages of alternatives for developing action plans to comply with internal/external customer demands for reliable processes/equipment to avoid failures. Uses statistical tools and DFSS methods to perform locomotive reliability analysis and predict future failures.
-Works with the development team to apply DFSS and quality engineering tools and methodologies that identify and eliminate the risk that design driven non-conformance transition to production and/or EMD end products.
THE KEY JOB ELEMENTS INCLUDE:
-Works under broad administrative instructions; and provides in-house engineering consulting activities to advise and council engineers on a variety of complicated design improvements supported by detailed calculations and guided by cost effective decisions and recommendations.
-Plans, conducts, and directs engineering research and development projects of major significance which are very difficult and complex in nature and require the expert application of advanced engineering knowledge from several different fields; and resolves difficult root cause failure analysis using Six Sigma methodologies to prevent future failures.
-Ensure implementation and application of industry best practices in DFSS, DFR, DFA, DFM, DFT and others as applicable into the design process for assigned products and produces metrics and reports for management review.
-Designs and develops new and unique engineering methods and procedures, special equipment, innovative test procedures, special analysis of failure techniques, and communicates these advanced concepts by way of detailed technical reports which are used in the supervision and education of other engineers.
-Ensure robust design through coaching and training designers in the use of appropriate tools and practices. Mentor assigned engineering teams regarding defect prevention, risk assessment and mitigation, corrective action, audits of design output and continuous process improvement.
-Participate in and contribute to project team meetings, drawing reviews, desk checks reviews, PRRs, CDRs, DDRs, PIRs, MFRs , TEST, Prototyping and other associated program activities. Provide data collection, analysis, and reporting to support these meetings as required.
-Represent the company in outside discussions and technical forums while working with wide latitude for un-reviewed action and decisions expected from a seasoned engineer.
Follows company safety and health guidelines and other company policies.
