Previously, we highlighted that neeto is a "collection of software". Now, we
highlight the tools we have for you to get things done.

It's a subtle change, but it's an important one.

No one is coming to neeto because we have many tools. People want to get their
work done and move on. It just so happens that in the modern world, we have a
lot of things to get done.

For these different things, people have to go to different places. It so happens
that neeto offers various tools, so you don't have to go to various places. It's
a nice convenience, but initially, the motivation for the folks is not that
neeto does 20 things. Initially, people are focused on getting the task they
have on their hands done quickly. Only later, when they start using more and
more neeto products, will the fact that neeto offers many products be a great
attraction.

If you have not given neeto a try, then it's good day to give it a try. As our
updated website says, neeto is all about making it easier to get things done.

At [neeto](https://www.neeto.com/), we are building many products, and each product presents its own design challenges. Upon discovering the issue, we discuss it internally and come to a solution. During the discussions, we look at various trade-offs, ask folks what they think about it, and we make a call. Sometimes, we make a good call, and sometimes, our calls are wrong, and we need to start from the drawing board to solve the problem.

So far, all that goes into making the decision is unknown to the folks outside of neeto. With this new series, others would get to see how we make "design decisions". Hence, the name of the series is "neeto design decisions".

We want to mention that we are very much inspired by the [Live design review](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j74mQ_dDmuI) video by Jason Fried. Inspired by videos like that, we are sharing how design decisions are made at neeto.

## Episode 1: Ability to easily identify the status of a ticket

In our first episode, we would look at the pain points we had with displaying the status of the ticket in [neetodesk](https://www.neeto.com/neetodesk) and how we solved it.

neeto Marketing Updates for July



In a [previous blog](/blog/neeto-products-and-people), we saw that at neeto we are building many products. In most of these products, some things are common like inviting team members, integration with Slack, filtering results, etc. In this blog, we will see how at neeto we use *nanos* to share code.

All the products need to manage their team members. It means people need to be invited, their roles need to be managed, and they need to be deactivated. This feature will be exactly the same in all the products. So copying and pasting the same code into multiple products is unnecessary.

We call this style of breaking a feature into the lowest level of business component that can be plugged into any product a “nano”. neeto-team-members is a nano. It consists of a single repository, but in that repository, we have two folders neeto-team-members-engine and neeto-team-members-frontend.

As the name suggests neeto-slack nano makes it easier for any product to have Slack integrations. Similarly, neeto-custom-domains make it easier for any product to have a custom domain.

It would be an understatement to say that nanos drive neeto. Every single time we need to copy a feature from one product to another we convert that feature into a nano. Now we don’t need to do copy paste and that feature can be used any neeto product.


In a <a href="/blog/neeto-products-and-people">previous blog</a>, we saw that at neeto we are building many products. In most of these products, some things are common like inviting team members, integration with Slack, filtering results, etc. In this blog, we will see how at neeto we use nanos to share code.
All the products need to manage their team members. It means people need to be invited, their roles need to be managed, and they need to be deactivated. This feature will be exactly the same in all the products. So copying and pasting the same code into multiple products is unnecessary.
We call this style of breaking a feature into the lowest level of business component that can be plugged into any product a “nano”. neeto-team-members is a nano. It consists of a single repository, but in that repository, we have two folders neeto-team-members-engine and neeto-team-members-frontend.

neeto Marketing Updates for May - A recap of our first steps



At [neeto](https://neeto.com/) we are building [lots of products](/blog/neeto-products-and-people). As we built more and more products, we ran into the issues of UI consistency. For example, the primary button's color and size would vary from product to product. Filter features would differ from product to product. Checkboxes would look different. Label, input fields, tabs, and other elements would look inconsistent. We started putting code in the folder to solve the problems of consistency, styling, and code duplication. This folder was shared by all the products.

This solved the problem only partially. What we needed was a neeto’s own UI library. [neetoUI](https://neeto-ui.neeto.com/) is the UI library of neeto. It makes it easier to build consistent UI across various neeto products and is currently being used in more than 20 neeto products. It’s [open source](https://github.com/bigbinary/neeto-ui). With the help of neetoUI, we were able to get consistency in buttons, text, links, and other UI elements.

## Building neetoUI

### neetoUI v2

neetoUI v1 was the first version released for the public on npm. We had decided very early that we would be using [Tailwind CSS](https://tailwindcss.com/) for styling our products, and hence we quickly created a few UI components and published the package on npm. We used [CRA](https://create-react-app.dev/) (Create React App) as a boilerplate and [craco](https://www.npmjs.com/package/@craco/craco) to customize some configurations around [CRA](https://create-react-app.dev/).

In neetoUI v1, we mainly focused on extracting standard components from each product we were building. neetoUI provided too much customizability, which led to problems. Hence, we decided to create neetoUI v2.

### neetoUI v2

In neetoUI v2, we made several bold decisions.

We moved away from Tailwind CSS for styling UI components. In v1, we were using Tailwind CSS at the package and host application levels. The host application styles often override the base styles of neetoUI components, causing all sorts of issues. Debugging these types of problems was very time-consuming. Removing the usage of Tailwind CSS from neetoUI solved all these issues.

We used [blueprintjs](https://blueprintjs.com/) for overlay components like Pane, Modal, Alert, etc. We got rid of blueprintjs too.

We also moved away from [CRA](https://create-react-app.dev/) and used [webpack](https://webpack.js.org/) for bundling neetoUI. This gave us more control over the whole bundling process.

Another decision was to move our color palette from Tailwind CSS base colors to a monochrome palette. One of the main reasons for using monochrome this time was that we first wished to tackle the UX aspect of products and then look into the UI aspect of it. A monochrome palette gave us the advantage of bringing in colors in the future. Our design team pitched a basic component library design system with a monochrome color palette, and we liked it. It was quickly rolled into neetoUI.

In neetoUI v2, we also dropped support for many introduced props due to quickly creating a component library in v1. We stuck to the base design system, which later helped us in making sure that all products dealt with actions in a consistent manner.

Considering this, we successfully released neetoUI v2 without external dependency on Tailwind CSS, [blueprintjs](https://blueprintjs.com/), or any other component library. There were a few exceptions. We had decided that for a few components like DatePicker, we would not be writing custom components from scratch, rather we would be overriding the styles of an external library. The only external dependency that we had on an external component library in neetoUI v2 was [antD](https://ant.design/), and that was because antD provided us with the perfect components for DatePicker and other date-time-related components.

In neetoUI v2, we started using [Storybook](https://storybook.js.org/) for documenting all our components.

### neetoUI v3

neetoUI v3 was a cleanup release. We made cosmetic changes along with some performance enhancements and made sure that the components would be scalable for the future.

We had reached a stage in product development where neetoUI was being used across all the products consistently, without any unwanted overrides. In v3, we decided to introduce a base color palette for neetoUI and moved away from the monochrome palette added in v2. We introduced a new primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, pastel colors, and shades of grey ranging from 100 to 800. This enhanced the UI of all products. The change in the color palette was not a breaking change, and almost all products switched to v3 in no time except for the ones that needed component-level style customizability.

V3 was also when we were rethinking our bundling process. We looked around for better tools and landed upon [rollup.js](https://rollupjs.org/). Tree shaking, bundling time, and the ease of configuration made it the perfect fit for our new choice of bundler. Using **rollup.js** reduced our bundle size by quite a considerable margin.

Since neetoUI was being used in all neeto products for all the UI elements, a bug in neetoUI or a change in logic could break multiple products simultaneously in a single release. Hence, we decided on writing tests for all the neetoUI, no matter how small the component usage is in the host products. We used [jest](https://jestjs.io/) and [react-testing-library](https://testing-library.com/docs/react-testing-library/intro/) for writing the unit tests. We added GitHub actions to ensure that any pull request would run these tests. This ensured that post v3, none of the changes in neetoUI brought any unknown bug in any of the neeto products.

### neetoUI v4

The neetoUI v4 release focused on design systems, design tokens, a11y, semantics, and scalable solutions.

Although we had been maintaining a design system, we noticed inconsistencies between neetoUI components and their corresponding designs in Figma. This was mainly due to delays in updating Figma files after changes were made in neetoUI. We faced conflicts in terms of design tokens, color palettes, and component naming conventions between the UI and UX teams. However, we were able to build a design system from scratch that built neetoUI v4 in a month’s time.

With a solid design system ready, the neetoUI team started pixel-perfecting every component. We were also keen on introducing a11y and semantics and hence, we started off with the basics of making sure that all elements can be tabbed through, making sure that focus is trapped within an overlay, and much more.

Since the release of neetoUI, we have received multiple requests to allow for theming of the color palette from the host application. In v4, we introduced [CSS variables](https://neeto-ui.neeto.com/?path=/docs/customize-css-variables--custom-branding) powered by SCSS files, which allowed users to customize any color from the palette to fit their needs. This means that users no longer need to overwrite all CSS classnames if they want to change the primary color to their brand palette; they can simply override the CSS variable for neetoUI primary color.

Till v4, neetoUI didn’t work well with IDEs. We had auto-completion support only for component names. To fix this, we added .d.ts files in which we defined the component data types. It significantly helped improve IntelliSense and autocompletion of component props served from the package.

neetoUI is our dedicated UI library, providing us with a consistent and scalable UI design across all our products. Our journey from neetoUI v1 to v4 has been full of learning experiences, and we are very happy with what we have built. With neetoUI, we are confident that we can continue to deliver exceptional user experiences to all our users.

At <a href="https://neeto.com/">neeto</a> we are building <a href="/blog/neeto-products-and-people">lots of products</a>. As we built more and more products, we ran into the issues of UI consistency. For example, the primary button's color and size would vary from product to product. Filter features would differ from product to product. Checkboxes would look different. Label, input fields, tabs, and other elements would look inconsistent. We started putting code in the folder to solve the problems of consistency, styling, and code duplication. This folder was shared by all the products.
This solved the problem only partially. What we needed was a neeto’s own UI library. <a href="https://neeto-ui.neeto.com/">neetoUI</a> is the UI library of neeto. It makes it easier to build consistent UI across various neeto products and is currently being used in more than 20 neeto products. It’s <a href="https://github.com/bigbinary/neeto-ui">open source</a>. With the help of neetoUI, we were able to get consistency in buttons, text, links, and other UI elements.

<h2>Building neetoUI</h2>
<h3>neetoUI v2</h3>
neetoUI v1 was the first version released for the public on npm. We had decided very early that we would be using <a href="https://tailwindcss.com/">Tailwind CSS</a> for styling our products, and hence we quickly created a few UI components and published the package on npm. We used <a href="https://create-react-app.dev/">CRA</a> (Create React App) as a boilerplate and <a href="https://www.npmjs.com/package/@craco/craco">craco</a> to customize some configurations around <a href="https://create-react-app.dev/">CRA</a>.
In neetoUI v1, we mainly focused on extracting standard components from each product we were building. neetoUI provided too much customizability, which led to problems. Hence, we decided to create neetoUI v2.
<h3>neetoUI v2</h3>
In neetoUI v2, we made several bold decisions.
We moved away from Tailwind CSS for styling UI components. In v1, we were using Tailwind CSS at the package and host application levels. The host application styles often override the base styles of neetoUI components, causing all sorts of issues. Debugging these types of problems was very time-consuming. Removing the usage of Tailwind CSS from neetoUI solved all these issues.
We used <a href="https://blueprintjs.com/">blueprintjs</a> for overlay components like Pane, Modal, Alert, etc. We got rid of blueprintjs too.
We also moved away from <a href="https://create-react-app.dev/">CRA</a> and used <a href="https://webpack.js.org/">webpack</a> for bundling neetoUI. This gave us more control over the whole bundling process.
Another decision was to move our color palette from Tailwind CSS base colors to a monochrome palette. One of the main reasons for using monochrome this time was that we first wished to tackle the UX aspect of products and then look into the UI aspect of it. A monochrome palette gave us the advantage of bringing in colors in the future. Our design team pitched a basic component library design system with a monochrome color palette, and we liked it. It was quickly rolled into neetoUI.
In neetoUI v2, we also dropped support for many introduced props due to quickly creating a component library in v1. We stuck to the base design system, which later helped us in making sure that all products dealt with actions in a consistent manner.
Considering this, we successfully released neetoUI v2 without external dependency on Tailwind CSS, <a href="https://blueprintjs.com/">blueprintjs</a>, or any other component library. There were a few exceptions. We had decided that for a few components like DatePicker, we would not be writing custom components from scratch, rather we would be overriding the styles of an external library. The only external dependency that we had on an external component library in neetoUI v2 was <a href="https://ant.design/">antD</a>, and that was because antD provided us with the perfect components for DatePicker and other date-time-related components.
In neetoUI v2, we started using <a href="https://storybook.js.org/">Storybook</a> for documenting all our components.
<h3>neetoUI v3</h3>
neetoUI v3 was a cleanup release. We made cosmetic changes along with some performance enhancements and made sure that the components would be scalable for the future.
We had reached a stage in product development where neetoUI was being used across all the products consistently, without any unwanted overrides. In v3, we decided to introduce a base color palette for neetoUI and moved away from the monochrome palette added in v2. We introduced a new primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, pastel colors, and shades of grey ranging from 100 to 800. This enhanced the UI of all products. The change in the color palette was not a breaking change, and almost all products switched to v3 in no time except for the ones that needed component-level style customizability.
V3 was also when we were rethinking our bundling process. We looked around for better tools and landed upon <a href="https://rollupjs.org/">rollup.js</a>. neetoUI is the UI library of neeto



We have a Google sheet named **neeto products and people**. Here is how it looked when this blog was published.

In a later blog, we will discuss why we are building so many products without ensuring the success of even a single product. This blog is all about what we are building at neeto. We would look at the “products” part of “neeto products and people”.

In the [previous article](/blog/how-neeto-got-the-name-neeto), we mentioned that at [BigBinary](https://bigbinary.com/), we were already using AceInvoice for time tracking and invoicing. We didn’t want to add any new features to AceInvoice so we decided to build nitroHelp and nitroForm. nitroHelp had three main features - chat, email-based ticketing, and knowledge base. After a few months of development, it became clear to us that nitroHelp should be broken into three different products. There was very little common between the three different features, and one look at the codebase made that very clear. We had folders like “chat”, “desk” and “KB” everywhere. We had to namespace a lot of models because common model names were taken and the unit tests took longer to run. We had to run the whole test suite even though something had changed only in, say KB area.

While splitting nitroHelp we changed the name from “nitro” to “neeto”. So now we had [neetoChat](https://www.neeto.com/neetochat), [neetoDesk](https://www.neeto.com/neetodesk), and [neetoKB](https://www.neeto.com/neetokb).

Soon we realized that users are not going to log into each of the products separately. So now we needed a single sign-on mechanism, and hence we built **neetoAuth**. neetoAuth is not a product that others can use. It’s an internal tool that manages authentication for all the neeto products.

nitroForm was also renamed to [neetoForm](https://www.neeto.com/neetoform). Working on neetoForm proved to be a lot more challenging than we had earlier estimated. neetoForm has a lot of surface area, and we needed to cover significant ground. In the beginning, neetoForm supported both the “card style” and the “long form” style. This created many design challenges. It also created engineering complexities, and we kept running into edge cases.

Finally, after months of setbacks, we decided to remove the support for “card style”. This immediately helped us deliver features at a faster pace and with more stability. At this time neetoForm is relatively stable, and our clients are happy using it.

As we were building new features we needed a way to let our users know of the new features that are being delivered. After some deliberations, we started working on [neetoChangelog](https://www.neeto.com/neetochangelog). Currently, neetoChangelog is working great. In fact if you signup for any of the neeto products you can click on “what’s new” to see neetoChangelog in action.

As we started building more products, we needed to worry about what the UI will look like. Some folks in the company knew Figma, so we had a couple of sessions with them to learn Figma. Folks also tried to learn Figma from online resources. We found the learning curve for Figma to be very high for our engineers. This is not a knock against Figma. Folks who are familiar with Figma love it and it's a great product. What we needed was a low-fidelity way of discussing what the interface would look like. Unlike professional UX folks, our goal was not to create a pixel-perfect design but to have a rough sketch of the UI.

After some deliberations, we decided to work on a POC to build a wireframing solution, and thus [neetoWireframe](https://www.neeto.com/neetowireframe) came to life.

So far we had been discussing product features, execution, deployment, etc in Github issues. This meant Github issues became a very noisy place. We decided to use GitHub only for the actual issues and not for the product feature discussion. After trying out a few products for the product discussion, we settled on building [neetoPlanner](https://www.neeto.com/neetoplanner).

Sometime back we started working with an organization that deals with mental health-related issues. They have more than 500 counselors on their platform. Deciding which patient would see which counselor was being done using a large Excel file. We started building [neetoCal](https://www.neeto.com/neetocal) in a rush and in a short span of time we got it working. We also got Stripe payment working with neetoCal. Our client is successfully receiving payments anytime a booking is made.

We have been using AceInvoice for a few years now for time tracking and invoicing. At this time, we had more than ten neeto products under development. We decided to migrate AceInvoice to [neetoInvoice](https://www.neeto.com/neetoinvoice) so that we would have a consistent set of code to maintain. Migrations are always tricky. After months and months of work, we were ready, and then one day, we migrated all the users and their data from AceInvoice to neetoInvoice. We did get a handful of issues from our customers, but overall it was a very smooth experience.

In the meantime, the time had come to conduct interviews with the folks in college for the following recruiting season. More than 600 folks responded to our call for the [BigBinary off-campus interview](https://offcampushiring.bigbinary.com/about). We checked with the existing vendors who provide technical assessment services, and the cost was coming up to be more than $20,000. So we decided to build [neetoRunner](https://www.neeto.com/neetorunner). neetoRunner would be a “code assessment” tool.

It was an extremely high-pressure project since we had only a few weeks to build it. We built it, and it worked almost. We didn’t do any stress testing, and when more than 600 people started using neetoRunner at the same time, then the database started to run out of connections. While the assessment was going on, we had to upgrade the database plan on Heroku to get more connections. Other than that everything else worked fine and neetoRunner proved to be a winner.

As the products started maturing, we needed to do a better job of testing them, and thus, we formed a “QA team.” We started using third-party tools to manage “test cases”. However, we found these tools to be extremely expensive. Since these tools charge per user, we couldn’t give access to developers who don’t need to see test cases very often. We decided to build [neetoTestify](https://www.neeto.com/neetotestify). Next week we would be migrating all the test cases from the third-party tool to neetoTestify, and we are very excited about it.

In August 2022, Heroku announced that free dynos would go away. We had been using Heroku review apps for all our products, and this change in plan increased our costs significantly since we are building so many products. In the future, we plan to add even more products. It means our Heroku cost will keep going up linearly.

We decided to do a quick POC to see if we can spin up something just for building the review apps for the pull requests. We named this product neetoReview. The POC worked, and slowly we migrated to neetoReview for the generation of all the review apps for all the neeto products. This was done by the end of Nov 2022. In a span of 9 weeks, we had gone from a mere idea to a complete migration off of Heroku.

neetoReview kept getting better, and in Feb 2023, we migrated all the staging applications of all the neeto products from Heroku to neetoReview. Well, now neetoReview can be used for things other than just “review apps.” So we changed the name from neetoReview to [neetoDeploy](https://www.neeto.com/neetodeploy).

neetoDeploy is shaping up to be a good Heroku alternative. As of this writing, all production instances are still being served by Heroku. BigBinary is primarily a Ruby on Rails and React consulting company. So building neetoDeploy was out of our comfort zone as it involves a lot of DevOps and Kubernetes skills. In the coming weeks and months, we would be discussing how we are building this Heroku alternative.

While we were building [neetoChat](https://www.neeto.com/neetochat) we were wondering why we need to ask the user what they need help with. We know that no one wants to chat with a support agent. People contact support agents because they feel stuck. We thought if we could somehow see what the user was doing just before clicking on the “chat icon,” that would give us a glimpse into what the user wanted to do but could not do.

That desire to see what the user was doing before contacting the support agent led us down the path of recording users’ sessions while they are online. This resulted in a new neeto product called [neetoReplay](https://www.neeto.com/neetoreplay). Using neetoReplay now, any website or web product owner can see what the users are doing on their site. neetoReplay has proved to be an immensely useful tool in fixing issues we didn’t even know existed.

Monitoring the health of our APIs and workers is essential. We are building neetoMonitor to do that.

[neetoSite](https://www.neeto.com/neetosite) is being built so that we can build simple websites without too much complexity.

As the name suggests, [neetoQuiz](https://www.neeto.com/neetoquiz) is to build quizzes, and [neetoCRM](https://www.neeto.com/neetocrm) is for CRM.

[neetoSocial](https://www.neeto.com/neetosocial) is a tool we are building for providing “social media analytics” and reporting.

While building neetoDeploy, we gained experience in handling Kubernetes. Leveraging that experience, we jumped in on building neetoCI to run our unit and cypress tests. Running cypress tests is proving to be very expensive and we are hoping that switching to neetoCI would cost us a lot less.

If you made it all the way to the end of this blog, then you might be wondering why neeto is building all these products. Why neeto is building business tools (neetoChat) and developer tools (neetoDeploy). Why build all these products without ensuring the success of even a single product? These are all good questions that we have asked ourselves many times. Next week we will try to answer these questions.

So we decided to build <a href="https://www.neeto.com/neetorunner">neetoRunner</a>. neetoRunner would be a “code assessment” tool.
It was an extremely high-pressure project since we had only a few weeks to build it. We built it, and it worked almost. We didn’t do any stress testing, and when more than 600 people started using neetoRunner at the same time, then the database started to run out of connections. While the assessment was going on, we had to upgrade the database plan on Heroku to get more connections. Other than that everything else worked fine and neetoRunner proved to be a winner.
As the products started maturing, we needed to do a better job of testing them, and thus, we formed a “QA team.” We started using third-party tools to manage “test cases”. However, we found these tools to be extremely expensive. Since these tools charge per user, we couldn’t give access to developers who don’t need to see test cases very often. We decided to build <a href="https://www.neeto.com/neetotestify">neetoTestify</a>. Next week we would be migrating all the test cases from the third-party tool to neetoTestify, and we are very excited about it.
In August 2022, Heroku announced that free dynos would go away. We had been using Heroku review apps for all our products, and this change in plan increased our costs significantly since we are building so many products. In the future, we plan to add even more products. It means our Heroku cost will keep going up linearly.
We decided to do a quick POC to see if we can spin up something just for building the review apps for the pull requests. We named this product neetoReview. The POC worked, and slowly we migrated to neetoReview for the generation of all the review apps for all the neeto products. This was done by the end of Nov 2022. In a span of 9 weeks, we had gone from a mere idea to a complete migration off of Heroku.
neetoReview kept getting better, and in Feb 2023, we migrated all the staging applications of all the neeto products from Heroku to neetoReview. Well, now neetoReview can be used for things other than just “review apps.” So we changed the name from neetoReview to <a href="https://www.neeto.com/neetodeploy">neetoDeploy</a>.
neetoDeploy is shaping up to be a good Heroku alternative. As of this writing, all production instances are still being served by Heroku. BigBinary is primarily a Ruby on Rails and React consulting company. So building neetoDeploy was out of our comfort zone as it involves a lot of DevOps and Kubernetes skills. In the coming weeks and months, we would be discussing how we are building this Heroku alternative.
While we were building <a href="https://www.neeto.com/neetochat">neetoChat</a> we were wondering why we need to ask the user what they need help with. We know that no one wants to chat with a support agent. People contact support agents because they feel stuck. We thought if we could somehow see what the user was doing just before clicking on the “chat icon,” that would give us a glimpse into what the user wanted to do but could not do.
That desire to see what the user was doing before contacting the support agent led us down the path of recording users’ sessions while they are online. This resulted in a new neeto product called <a href="https://www.neeto.com/neetoreplay">neetoReplay</a>. Using neetoReplay now, any website or web product owner can see what the users are doing on their site. neetoReplay has proved to be an immensely useful tool in fixing issues we didn’t even know existed.
Monitoring the health of our APIs and workers is essential. We are building neetoMonitor to do that.
<a href="https://www.neeto.com/neetosite">neetoSite</a> is being built so that we can build simple websites without too much complexity.
As the name suggests, <a href="https://www.neeto.com/neetoquiz">neetoQuiz</a> is to build quizzes, and <a href="https://www.neeto.com/neetocrm">neetoCRM</a> is for CRM.
<a href="https://www.neeto.com/neetosocial">neetoSocial</a> is a tool we are building for providing “social media analytics” and reporting.
While building neetoDeploy, we gained experience in handling Kubernetes. Leveraging that experience, we jumped in on building neetoCI to run our unit and cypress tests. Running cypress tests is proving to be very expensive and we are hoping that switching to neetoCI would cost us a lot less.
If you made it all the way to the end of this blog, then you might be wondering why neeto is building all these products. Why neeto is building business tools (neetoChat) and developer tools (neetoDeploy). Why build all these products without ensuring the success of even a single product? These are all good questions that we have asked ourselves many times. Next week we will try to answer these questions.

At neeto we are building a lot of products. Let's have a look at what these products are.

neeto products and people



As a consulting company, [BigBinary](https://bigbinary.com/) needed to do time tracking and invoicing. In the early stages, we were using time tracking and invoicing tools by other vendors. After a while, we had a pretty good idea of what we needed in time tracking and invoicing software.

In Sep 2013, we started the development of a similar service. It was on a slow track because we worked on it whenever we had downtime from the client work.

**In March 2017,** we bought the domain [aceinvoice.com](https://www.aceinvoice.com/). The other domain in consideration was timenano.com. After a few months, we started using AceInvoice for all BigBinary activities.

We didn’t want to keep adding features to AceInvoice that we wouldn’t use. So now we needed a new project to work on during our downtime.

From time to time, we will get support questions on AceInvoice, and we decided to build a customer help software. First, we needed a FAQ-type questions management service. Since the name of the invoicing software was aceinvoice we looked for acehelp and it was available.

**In May 2018,** we bought the domain acehelp.com.

At that time, [Elm](https://elm-lang.org/) was a new emerging programming language that captured our fascination. Working with Elm didn’t go very well. It had a very high learning curve. After six months of development, we had made very little progress. So we ditched Elm and started development with React.js from scratch.

Around the same time, BigBinary hired engineers from various colleges for campus recruitment. Now we needed a project for them to work on to learn Ruby on Rails and React. acehelp was primarily a knowledge base software. Since chat software is most likely to use a knowledge base software, we thought the next product should be a chat product. However, the domain acechat.com was taken.

**In Jan 2020,** we bought the domain nitrochat.com. We also bought the domain nitrohelp.com so that we could move acehelp to nitrohelp.

A few months later pandemic started, and many clients released our engineers. So now we had a lot of engineers available to do internal work. We have been using Calendly for a while, so we know what needs to be in scheduling software.

**In April 2020,** we bought the domain nitrocal.com.

Because of the pandemic, all the schools and teachers had to go online. From what we gathered, we thought the education community needed quizzing software. In July, we noticed that nitroquiz.com was already taken. We thought all the other products were moving to nitro so we should move aceinvoice.com to nitroinvoice.com. But nitroinvoice.com was also taken. At the same time, we decided to split nitrohelp into nitrochat, nitrodesk, and nitroKB. However, nitrodesk.com was taken.

**In August 2020,** we bought the domains nitrodesk.io, nitroform.io, nitroquiz.io, and nitrocal.io.

**In September 2020**, we bought the domain nitroindex.io so that all the products could be under one brand of “nitro”.

However, we had a problem. nitroindex.io is a terrible domain name. Secondly, we would have to buy a new domain for each new product, and it was increasingly difficult to ensure that the domain was available. For example, nitrochangelog.com was already taken.

It was almost impossible to find a larger number of domains where both domain names are dictionary words. So we decided to look at non-dictionary names.

**In Oct 2020**, we bought the domain [neeto.com](https://www.neeto.com/) for $4895.

Two years later, in Oct 2022, we are writing our first blog. In the coming weeks and months, we’ll talk about how we are building neeto, our technology decisions, our process, our design decisions, mobile development, the challenges we face, hiring, project management, consistency issues, and much more.
