How you screen record on a laptop depends on its operating system, not on its brand. On a Windows laptop (HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer), press **Windows + Shift + R** to use the Snipping Tool on Windows 11. On a MacBook, press **Shift + Command + 5**. On a Chromebook, press **Shift + Ctrl + Show windows**.

These built-in tools save a video file on your laptop. If you want to share the recording, [NeetoRecord](https://www.neeto.com/neetorecord) is a free screen recorder that works on Windows, Mac and Linux laptops, and on Chromebooks through the Chrome extension. It records your screen, webcam and voice, then copies a share link the moment you stop. The free plan includes 200 videos a month, up to 15 minutes each, in up to 4K.

Below are the exact steps for each type of laptop, how to record with sound, and the keyboard shortcuts to remember.

## First, check which laptop you have

- **HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, Microsoft Surface, MSI:** These almost always run Windows. Follow the Windows steps.
- **MacBook Air or MacBook Pro:** These run macOS. Follow the Mac steps.
- **Chromebook:** These run ChromeOS. HP, Lenovo, Acer and others also make Chromebooks, so check for "Chromebook" on the lid or in the settings.

## How to screen record on a Windows laptop (HP, Dell, Lenovo and others)

HP, Dell and Lenovo laptops do not have their own screen recorder. They use the tools that come with Windows.

### Option 1: Snipping Tool (Windows 11)

1. Press **Windows + Shift + R**.
2. Drag to choose the area you want to record.
3. Turn on the microphone in the toolbar if you want to talk. Recent versions also let you add system audio.
4. Click **Start** , then click **Stop** when you are done.

The video is saved in **Videos \> Screen Recordings**.

### Option 2: Xbox Game Bar (Windows 10 and 11)

1. Open the app you want to record and click inside it.
2. Press **Windows + Alt + R** to start recording.
3. Press **Windows + Alt + M** to turn the microphone on or off.
4. Press **Windows + Alt + R** again to stop.

The video is saved in **Videos \> Captures**. The Game Bar records one app at a time. It cannot record the desktop or File Explorer.

### Laptop keyboard tip

On many laptops, the top row of keys controls brightness and volume by default. If a shortcut that uses a top-row key does not work, hold the **Fn** key while you press it. The shortcuts above do not use the top row, so they work the same on every Windows laptop.

## How to screen record on a MacBook

1. Press **Shift + Command + 5**. A toolbar appears at the bottom of the screen.
2. Choose **Record Entire Screen** or **Record Selected Portion**.
3. To record your voice, click **Options** and choose your microphone.
4. Click **Record**.
5. To stop, click the stop button in the menu bar, or press **Command + Control + Esc**.

By default, the video is saved on your desktop. You can change this under Options. You can also record with QuickTime Player: open it and choose File \> New Screen Recording.

**Good to know:** The built-in Mac recorder does not record the sound playing on your Mac, only your microphone. The NeetoRecord desktop app can record system audio on macOS 15 or later (a Pro feature).

## How to screen record on a Chromebook

1. Press **Shift + Ctrl + Show windows**. The Show windows key is the one with a rectangle and two lines, in the top row. Or open Quick Settings and click **Screen capture**.
2. In the toolbar, switch from screenshot to **Screen record** (the video camera icon).
3. Choose full screen, a part of the screen or one window.
4. To record your voice, click the settings gear and turn on the microphone.
5. Click to start. To stop, click the red stop button at the bottom right of the screen.

The video is saved in your **Downloads** folder, in the Files app.

You can also install the NeetoRecord Chrome extension on a Chromebook. It records your screen, a window or a tab with your webcam, and gives you a share link.

## How to screen record on a laptop with NeetoRecord (any laptop, free)

Built-in tools save a file. That is fine for yourself. But if you are sending a walkthrough to a client, a bug report to a developer or a lesson to students, a link works better than a large file. NeetoRecord gives you that link.

1. [Download the NeetoRecord desktop app](https://www.neeto.com/neetorecord/download) for Windows, Mac or Linux. Or add the [Chrome extension](https://www.neeto.com/neetorecord/features/chrome-extension), which works in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Arc.
2. Sign up for free and log in.
3. Choose full screen, a window or a custom area. Pick your microphone and camera.
4. Click **Start recording**. Pause or restart any time.
5. Click **Finish recording**. The link is copied to your clipboard.

On the free plan, every recording gets an AI title, summary, chapters and a transcript. You also get auto zoom on clicks, mouse-click highlights and trimming. To keep a copy on your laptop, turn on **Save video to my laptop** in Settings \> General.

## How to screen record on a laptop with audio

- **Windows (Snipping Tool):** Turn on the microphone and system audio buttons in the recording toolbar.
- **Windows (Game Bar):** App sound is recorded. Press Windows + Alt + M to add your voice.
- **MacBook:** Choose a microphone under Options. Built-in tools do not record system sound.
- **Chromebook:** Turn on the microphone in the screen capture settings.
- **NeetoRecord:** Your microphone is free on every laptop. System audio is on the Pro plan, on Windows, Linux, macOS 15 or later, and in the Chrome extension.

Use headphones when you record system audio. This stops your microphone from picking up your speakers and causing an echo.
